If you target the wrong
keywords, all your efforts will be in vain!
For example, if you optimize your Web pages for
keywords that you think are important, but few, if anybody on the Web
searches for those keywords, then you can have all the number one rankings
you want and still gain no new traffic.
Sometimes people use submittal
search engine programs and achieve many top rankings but then they
complain that they didn't receive any traffic from their efforts. At
first they tend to blame the software. However, in almost all cases, the
explanation is simple. They targeted the WRONG keywords!
Another danger of choosing keywords is selecting keywords that are TOO
popular. Selecting keywords that are overly broad and popular poses two
problems. First, if the keyword is too popular, it will require more
work than it's worth to achieve a top ten ranking. Words like Christian,
Jesus, Bible etc.
Second, and most importantly, if
the phrase is too broad, then the traffic you receive will not be
appropriate to your site, and thereby will not result in as many visitors
as a highly targeted phrase.
The question is, what is the best way to choose the right keywords?
Finding the BEST keywords can help you achieve greater amounts of traffic
with less effort on your part. More traffic for less time spent, a
desirable goal right?
Most search engines results are
generated automatically based on the words on a given page, and how they
relate to a particular query. It is possible the search terms you used to
find your page are common to many of the approximately 50 million pages
are indexed.
It is also possible the main
theme of the words on your page may not be as relevant to a particular
query as it might be as compared to other pages. If you want your link to
rank higher in the search results than it might otherwise do for a
particular query, consider the following:
A) Really emphasize the desired words and concepts in the text on your
page. Do not just repeat the words over and over again on the page (this
is called word spamming and is screened for.)
B) Take a look at the source code for pages that rank high under the
searches you feel are relevant to your content, and compare them to your
pages.
C) Do not use frames without using a <NO FRAMES> section to describe your
page. Most search engine spiders does not follow frames
to determine content. Using <NO FRAMES> gives the spider content
to index.
